Animal rights organisation SAFE says New Zealanders are being treated disrespectfully by Woolworths - which is refusing to phase out all cage eggs at Countdown stores.
A recent Serious Fraud Office investigation into one of Countdown's alleged free range egg suppliers has strengthened calls for cage eggs to go, and cage cruelty to end.
SAFE's head of campaigns Mandy Carter said Woolworths listened to its Australian customers when they called for cage eggs to be banned - so she doesn't understand why Kiwis aren't afforded the same respect.
"What is it going to take for them to listen and stop treating Kiwis as second rate? Because that's what's happening at the moment."
Ms Carter said SAFE's views echo most Kiwis, with three out of four in a recent poll wanting caged eggs banned.
"Enough with the excuses, time to step up and go fully cage free- announce the date that you'll phase out all caged eggs because that's actually what we're asking you to do, just to name a date."
