RSA: Flag debate timing insensitive

The RSA wants the flag debate postponed until all commemorations of World War One are finished.

RSA president BJ Clark told the Justice and Electoral Committee today the timing of the debate is particularly insensitive, with written submissions having to be in before the 100 year Gallipoli anniversary.

He says the flag isn't just a symbol of the past.

"Many who have served, they see the flag as representing their oath. They see the flag draped over the coffins of their friends and family who paid the ultimate sacrifice for peace and security of us all."

Meanwhile, people who oppose the flag referendum process are being encouraged to spoil their ballot papers.

Winston Peters has delivered an impassioned submission to the Justice and Electoral committee, saying New Zealanders should be asked if they want to change the flag first, before being forced to look at options.

The New Zealand First leader has a solution for those want to cut off the process with one referendum.

"You go down, you write 'I support our flag'. That's all you have to do.

"That then becomes a statement and also a protest of what's going on."
