New Zealand and Australia could be teaming up, to keep the military influence of China and Russia out of the Pacific.

The Australian newspaper reports the two countries are preparing to sign an agreement on the issue.

Sky's Kieran Gilbert says it's likely to prevent non-Pacific countries from conducting military activities in Pacific countries.

"The agreement covering defence, law and order and humanitarian assistance is expected to be signed at the Pacific Islands Forum in September."
