The Christchurch City Council has given the sale of Redcliffs Park the go ahead, to be used as the new site for Redcliffs School.

The community’s been locked in a battle with the Ministry of Education since the 2010/2011 Canterbury earthquakes.

At the time, then-education minister Hekia Parata closed the school citing a rockfall risk – a claim that’s seen major opposition over the years.

In November, Ms Parata announced the school would not re-open on its original site but new areas would be explored.

One of the proposed options – a near two-hectare site currently known as Redcliffs Park.

Today, councillors voted for a land swap with the ministry.

Redcliffs School Principal Rose McInerney says she is elated and relieved.

"It's a big step forward that we've been working so hard towards. A huge amount of people have given a huge amount of their own time to make it all happen for us and finally after six years we've got a decision that we know provides certainty for our community."

Redcliffs Park will become a school, while the old site will be transformed into a community park
