Red Zone report highlights stress, stigma

For people living in Christchurch's red zone, life has been more stressful after the earthquakes, than when they endured them in the first place.

Around 8000 homes were red zoned after the quakes in 2010 and 2011.

The Human Rights Commission's surveyed more than 100 people who either still live in red zoned houses or own land in the residential red zone.

Its report shows more than half show signs of poor well-being and most feel a lack of control.

Additionally, people still living in Christchurch's red zone feel ostracized from the Greater Christchurch community - after being tagged with the term "red zoners"

It's just one of the things referenced in the Human Rights Commission's report on how the decision to red zone earthquake-damaged land after the Canterbury earthquakes, breaches basic human rights.

Chief Commissioner David Rutherford said the term is stigmatising.

"It would be helpful now to rename the zone so it doesn't have the pejorative flavour that it has taken on in some people's view."

It's been a long battle for those staying in the red zone, with their lengthy insurance wrangles and fight for more property rights lasting nearly six years.
