The Maritime Industry is taking a closer look at its coastal safety practices following the Transport Accident Investigation Commission on the Rena grounding.

Key recommendations more navigation aids, better modes of communication and better safety education and awareness.

Director of Maritime New Zealand Keith Manch says the industry will be taking these recommendations into account.

"The recommendations that the commission has made, we've accepted those and they're actually been taken account of as part of a coastal mitigation safety review that we have underway, which is really stepping back and looking at the coastal shipping environment."

The recommendations include better communication between ships, best practice navigation standards and aids and for countries' maritime training to be in line with international standards.

Chief investigator of accidents Tim Burfoot told Newstalk ZB's Larry Williams it's important every ship has good safety practices in place.

"This one was just a good blessing in that if you don't follow best practice and the best procedures, procedures you're supposed to be doing, something like this is going to happen."
