Being part of the New Years Honours and receiving a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit feels like an added bonus for one recipient.

Retired politician Peter Dunne said he always saw reward and recognition in doing his job to the best of his ability.

The former United Future called it quits on his political career in August, after serving 33 years as an MP.

Dunne said he's receiving a great honour and is aware of what is represents.

"A sense of huge gratitude to New Zealand for putting me in the position where I was able to get this honour, but also a sense of further obligation to do my best for this country in the future."

Dunne called time on his political career weeks out from the 2017 General Election but says there's no regrets, and is especially proud of one of his last achievements.

"Amalgamation of rural and volunteer and professional fire services into one unified fire and emergency services, which had been talked about for 70 years, finally achieved."

Dunne served as Minister of Revenue under both Helen Clark and John Key.

He founded the United Future party, which has now disbanded after low returns in the election.
