A strange sea creature has washed up on a beach near Dunedin.

A three metre long oarfish was found near the Aramoana Spit, the fish can grow up to 11 metres in length.

The New Zealand Marine Studies Centre describes the fish as long distance vertical drifters.

It says they're usually found hanging vertically in the water.

Oarfish are also known to self-amputate by biting off their tails.
