October is Save Kiwi Month, and Kiwis for Kiwi are looking to build an up-to-date picture of where Kiwi are living in New Zealand.

Kiwis for Kiwi want people to help them work out where Kiwi are, and where they aren't, in New Zealand.

Executive director Michelle Impey said they'd love people to join in, by keeping an eye out for signs of the national bird in their backyard, and then recording them online.

She said that could be listening for their calls at night, or looking for visible signs of the Kiwi.

"A footprint, a Kiwi poo, two probe holes where they may have been feeding, or probably feathers are going to be the best indication."

Impey said anyone in New Zealand can record signs of Kiwi they've hear or seen in their back yard.

She said they've got maps of the country with little coloured blotches showing where they believe there are Kiwi living - but some of the data is really old.

The programme is being called the 'Quest for Kiwi'.
