Push to lower suicide rates

Measure the effectiveness of existing suicide prevention measures before creating a new one.

That's the message from one counsellor, as the Ministry of Health, district health boards and other organisations work on an online system aimed at lowering New Zealand's suicide rate.

There were 529 recorded suicides as of 30 June 2014.

24-7 director Steve Taylor says he's unsure whether the information-sharing system counts as a step, let alone one in the right direction.

"I think a step in the right direction would be a comprehensive and systematic review of everything we've had prior before we start coming up with any new ideas."

Taylor says no one is measuring the outcomes of previous prevention strategies, but the counsellor believes a new prevention measure being rolled out by Facebook could be worthwhile, if others follow its lead.

The social media network is trialling a system where friends can anonymously report people they have concerns for, leading to offers of help.

"If other platforms took on a similar process and similar initiatives and it kind of snowballed, I think it would be very useful."

Taylor says with over a billion users, Facebook could be faced with a large amount of information needing to be reviewed.

"My overarching concern is that any intervention we seem to do in this country is so incredibly piecemeal and fractured and is not actually monitored by any one particular body."
