Protests ignite over crematorium plan

The man who wants to put a cremator in Thames is furious at the level of public outcry his plans have attracted.

Around 200 people marched up the main street yesterday protesting about plans to have a cremator installed in a Grahamstown building.

Twentymans Funeral Services Director Adrian Catrin says he's not building a crematorium, he's just looking to put a cremator in an existing building.

"Most of these people, in fact all of these people, who have marched or who are protesting against the cremator have not come and spoken to me, have no idea what's happening. So they've really gone off without any basis."

Catrin says modern cremators emit no smoke, no smell, and no particulate.

"I live within sixty metres of the cremator, and I'm going to build a function centre within fifty metres of the cremator. And I certainly will not be putting in anything which is going to be detrimental to the business."

The Thames Coromandel District Council can't do anything about public concerns until a consent application is lodged.

Area Manager Greg Hampton says the public can be assured they'll look into it thoroughly.

"Council is in the position where it's really waiting to hear from Twentymans Funeral Services whether they intend to put a cremator in."
