Bernie Monk says the proposed Great Walk from the Pike River Mine site is intended as a big thank you to the West Coast community.
The Government's commissioned a feasibility study into the walk over the Paparoa Ranges, as part of lasting tribute to the 29-men that died.
Families spokesperson Bernie Monk says it's a gift to everyone who has supported them from the beginning.
"I think we owe it to the community, we owe it to New Zealand for having to put up with us over the last getting on to five years now and we would love to give something back."
Mr Monk says the walk will create jobs, and tourism so the whole West Coast can benefit.
