A $35 million proposal has been put forward for the future use of Canterbury's Waimakariri residential red zone.

The Waimakariri District Council has released a discussion document, proposing a number of options for 100-hectares of space in Kaiapoi, Pines Beach and Kairaki.

It's the first time a plan has been put forward for the use of the land, which has been out of use since the earthquakes.

A number of developments are planned including four large full-sized playing fields, a food forest, a BMX track, and a dog park.

The council is also considering leasing out some of the land for rural use, but Waimakariri mayor David Ayers said intensive farming won't be allowed.

"It's an environmental thing. I mean if you talked about intensive farming of a poultry or pig farm for instance, you certainly don't want those near residential areas."

Local Labour MP Clayton Cosgrove is backing the proposal. He said it's time to move forward and use the land.

"Council's been very open about gathering ideas and asking the community for feedback, and I'd call on the community now to take advantage of the further consultation period."

Residents have one month to comment.
