Praise for Auckland's double decker plan

Trees are being pruned, signs altered and shop canopies shifted to make way for Auckland's new double-decker buses.

Auckland Transport is spending close to $2 million making sure the city's busiest roads can accommodate the tall additions to its public transport fleet.

Chairman Dr Lester Levy said he knows of accidents where double decker buses have swiped shop fronts, so they are clearing the way before buses start hitting roads in October.

"We're going right through all those routes to ensure that everything is clear and unobstructed, and that work will be completed shortly."

He said they will also need to stay on top of road maintenance as the buses are heavier than usual urban traffic.

Dr Levy said more than 100 passengers can fit on the buses.

He believes that although they may be bigger and bulkier, the state-of-the-art people movers are not noisier.

Transport blogger Matt Lowrie is welcoming yesterday's Auckland Transport announcement.

He believes the two-storey people movers get more people from A to B, without adding to congestion, which solve issues for bus commuters.

"You hear stories of people watching 12 buses go past as they wait at the bus stop because they're just so full."

Lowrie said bigger buses are needed on those busy routes, so people have confidence that public transport can get them where they need to be, on time.
