New Zealand's history, freedom and our commonwealth attachments are some of the themes which shape our national identity.
That's according to feedback from the public, given to the Flag Consideration Panel.
MORE: Proposed New Zealand flags
Potential designs for a new national flag are flooding in at a rate of a hundred a day.
Around 600 designs have been sent in, and 110,000 people have watched a video on the history of the New Zealand flag.
Professor John Burrows is chair of the panel, which is overseeing the campaign to decide whether we'll have a new flag.
He claims as well as helping people discuss the future of the flag, the panel must come up with four new designs for possible alternatives.
"If we know what people think is special to them about New Zealand - what's really important to them - it may be possible to get a flag which embodies those things."
