A postie has been stood down after 3000 items of mail, including more than 600 voting packs weren't delivered in the Wellington suburb of Maupuia.

13 streets in Maupuia have been affected.

New Zealand Post says following an investigation, its discovered around 300 mail items haven't been delivered as intended - that included 667 unopened voting packs.

But it won't be drawn on exactly what happened to the undelivered mail or what state it is now in.

Voter packs are being delivered to the affected houses tomorrow and the rest of the mail once it's sorted.

The postie is now facing a disciplinary process.

Massey University's Dr Andy Asquith said this sort of incident anywhere in the country could have massive implications in the upcoming elections.

He said it's not beyond the realms of possibility that people may be elected with majorities in double figures.

Dr Asquith said it raises the deeper issue of how we should conduct our local body elections, saying this sort of incident will have people screaming for electronic voting in the next election.

However, he said the best option is to have people physically going to polling booths with some form of identity.

He said that will re-connect people with the elections and take away the chance of papers going missing.
