Tree-lovers may be fighting a losing battle in their efforts to save two Magnolia trees on one of Auckland's swankiest streets.
More than 300 people have signed a petition against the removal of the trees from Ponsonby Road.
The trees don't meet the criteria for protection by the independent hearings panel for Auckland's planning rule book.
Waitemata Local Board's Vernon Tava said no one has the power to stop the trees being removed from Auckland Council's protection schedule.
"It's basically a forgone conclusion that these particular trees will unfortunately be taken off the schedule."
Those opposing the removal of the trees will voice their concerns under the trees on Sunday.
