The Government's cool on climate change proposals being put forward by an independent officer of Parliament

The Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment is calling on politicians to take a more united front on climate change legislation.

Dr Jan Wright is recommending we adopt a UK model and put in place legislation that set emissions targets and carbon budgets.

Climate Change Minister Paula Bennett said we're very different to the UK, both in terms of our emissions profile and systems.

"I don't think that setting up an independent climate change body would work for us at the moment. But I certainly think that it might be something worth looking at in the future."

Ms Bennett said there is space for cross party work to be done, citing the bipartisan approach being taken with MPs on a group called Globe New Zealand.

"I think it could lead there, we're just not at the stage right now to be doing that."

Green MP Kennedy Graham also sees scope for cooperation

"But there is a far more respectful dialogue going on now, between parties, than there ever was before."

ACT leader David Seymour said there is a lot Parliament could be doing on climate change; such as pricing roads and water, and making it easier to ride share.

But he's not convinced an over-arching Climate Change Act is needed.

However, Mr Seymour does think it's critical for the business community that politicians do have a unified approach.

"I think it's critical for the business community that we do have a unified approach. People don't want to see chopping and changing, they just want to see what the policy is."

The Maori Party wants to see cross party work on climate change turn into concrete climate change policy.

Party co-leader Marama Fox said it's a huge issue for the country, and one causing concern for our young people who want to know what the hell politicians are doing about it.

She said steps are being taken, highlighting work being done by a cross-party group.

"It has put together what a zero emissions New Zealand would look like and what it need to get and I think what we need to do is adopt that as a policy across all parties and work our way towards it."
