There'll be a strong political presence on the Pike River pickets this morning as opposition politicians back the Pike River families in their fight for recovery of their men.

Labour Leader Andrew Little and Green MP Denise Roche will both join relatives of those killed in the 2010 mine explosion as they continue their fight to prevent the mine being permanently sealed.

Both Labour and the Greens want an independent report conducted on re-entering the mine - the Government's view is current advice is that re-entry is unsafe and health and safety laws mean no risks can be taken.

Meanwhile, after Winston Peter's visit at the weekend, New Zealand First has backed the research conducted by the Pike River families and maintains the mine can be re-entered.

Families and supporters have been protesting there since November - fighting for access to the mine's drift.

Anna Osborne lost her husband, Milton, in the 2010 disaster.

She said it's good to see such a rally of support behind them after such a long time.

"Its really gained us some momentum and attraction now, and we feel that we're not fighting this on our own- we do have the support of most of our nation behind us now."

She said they'll welcome Little to stand with them at the entry to Pike River.

"Even though he's not making any promises to the families he has agreed to do another review on Pike River and get experts around the table talking."

Anna Osborne said it's been a tiring six years fighting for accountability.
