UPDATED 12:38pm: Political quips, insults and tirades have taken out the top spots in Massey University's 2014 Quote of the Year competition.

Cameron Slater, the controversial blogger at the centre of the Dirty Politics storm, came in first.

The winning line, with 21 percent of the vote: 'I play politics like Fijians play rugby. My role is smashing your face into the ground.'

This was closely followed by Internet Party press secretary Pam Corkery's emotional tirade at a journalist: 'You work in news you puffed up little...When will you glove puppets of Cameron Slater just piss off?'

Steven Joyce's conclusion on National's Eminem-esque campaign song 'We think it's, um, pretty legal' rounded out the top three, while David Cunliffe's apology for being a man was fifth.

'No more beersies for you' was the highest-ranking non-election quote; the anti-drink driving campaign slogan came in at number six.
