Police partners suffer secondary trauma

Police have started running presentations for partners on graduation day to help reduce the impact of the stresses officers bring home.

A survey has found nearly 25 per cent of emergency service workers partners say they suffer moderate, high or severe secondary trauma caused from hearing about events affecting their partner or their partner's reactions.

Inspector Iain Saunders said they started running the program last year after the research highlighted the problem.

He said they point to the importance of talking with partners about what happened.

"We talk about the importance of discussions with partners about what happens at work and how good our safety systems are, how well trained our people are, how well equipped they are," he said.

Saunders said the survey shows the impact of police work on police partners.

He said often partners are left guessing about what could have happened without knowing the actual details.

"For partners often they just hear the stories or see the torn uniform or something that hasn't got some concrete experience attached to it so they are left kind of guessing what might have happened," he said.
