The Ministry of Education said it's working closely with Opotiki College following allegations of a sexual nature involving students.

Police are investigating and said there's no indication the alleged offending occurred at school or involved staff.

Ministry spokesperson, Katrina Casey, said allegations of this type are very concerning and will affect the school and the wider community.

She said the school is being supported by professionals from different agencies, including the ministry.

Katrina Casey said they are also working with the school's leadership team to minimise disruption to school life and help restore day-to-day routines.

Newstalk ZB reporter Georgia Nelson was told by police that the inquiry is in its early stages, and that the police are working with the young people concerned, families, the school and other agencies.

Detective Inspector Mark Loper said they're in the initial stages of the investigation and they're working closely with the young people concerned, families, the school and other agencies.

Anyone who has information or could be a victim is being urged to call 07 348 0099.
