The man whose body washed up on Christchurch's New Brighton beach has been named.

Police have identified him as Graeme Guerin, who lived alone in Edgeware.

He was reported missing by his family last night.

The 57 year old was found 200 metres from the pier on Sunday morning.

His death isn't being treated as suspicious and has been referred to the coroner.

In a statement his family said they're still in shock and that he was an active man who enjoyed visiting the beach.

Police are still piecing together what happened.
