Huntly Police are concerned about a fleeing driver who abandoned his car and jumped into the Waikato River.

In the early hours of Saturday, the driver of a Mazda 323 fled from police between Horotiu and Huntly.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Patterson says the pursuit was abandoned near Tainui Bridge, where the driver jumped into the river - swimming north before disappearing from view.

Police spoke to the other occupants of the vehicle and deployed two boats to extensively search the river - but they could not find the driver.

That day, the Police Eagle helicopter and another boat continued searching, but police have been unable to establish who the man is or if he got out of the river safely.
