Plan to add new freedom camping sites across Auckland

UPDATED 11.21AM The sight of freedom campers parked up near beaches and reserves could become a lot more common across Auckland.

Auckland Council is proposing a pilot scheme from the beginning of February.

It says it's sent out a list of about 60 sites, but expects the number will be reduced to between 15 and 20 once Local Boards have had their say.

Under current bylaws, freedom camping is only allowed at 12 sites in three parts of the city - the Franklin, Hibiscus and Bays and Rodney local board areas.

If the pilot goes ahead, it would take place during February and March. The findings of the programme will be presented back to Local Boards in April.

Motor Caravan Association chief Bruce Lochore said the Council has taken quite a bit of time to assess the issue.

He said it's been a "well-thought out and well-considered approach".

But Takapuna Devonport Local Board deputy chair George Wood said the idea has been sprung on the boards, and there's not enough time for discussion.

"It's not a done decision, but in a matter like this, Council has a duty to talk to the community to find out what their views are, and that can't happen in four weeks."

Wood said it's an issue that needs more consideration.

"We're only three weeks away from Christmas, so thinking that they're going to have workshops with Council and Local Boards in that short period of time, I just don't think it's on."

He said freedom camping has caused issues in other regions, and he doesn't think it's suitable for many of the proposed sites.

Wood said Council should scrap the idea and go back to the drawing board.
