Pioneering potter, sculptor, conservationist and railway enthusiast Barry Brickell, OBE, has passed away after a battle with cancer.

He was owner and creator of Driving Creek railway in the Coromandel.

He spent 33 years building the narrow gauge railway on his 23 hectares of rugged land, also planting thousands of native trees and making it a predator free sanctuary.

Five pieces of his highly original pottery were purchased for the opening of the Beehive in 1970.

He was awarded an OBE for services to pottery in 1988 and also wrote several books.

A major retrospective of his work was assembled by the Dowse Art Museum in 2013 and was toured nationally until 2015.

Mr Brickell died yesterday afternoon at his home in Driving Creek.

He was 80 years old.
