It's believed the person who died in a North Canterbury road crash last night was electrocuted.
Police say it happened on O'Hallorans Road - a gravel road near Glentui - when one car collided with a power pole - breaking the pole and dropping live wires onto the car.
A passenger was electrocuted when they got out of the car and died at the scene.
Two occupants of the following car tried to help their friend and also suffered electric shocks - they were taken to Christchurch Hospital.
The crash also caused a small vegetation fire which was put out by the Oxford fire service.
