Parents not to blame for autistic boy drowning

Autism New Zealand are pleased with a coroner's report that places no blame onto the parents for the death of a young autistic boy.

Jahmaine Reihana, 5, died after climbing into a water tank on the family property in Foxton last year.

Coroner Tim Scott found the boy's parents couldn't be expected to watch Jahmaine every second of the day.

Autism NZ's CEO Dane Dougan said each autistic kid is different, meaning parents of each kid face different challenges.

"These tragic circumstances can happen to any family, whether there is autism involved or not. Obviously our thoughts lie with the family."

The organisation is happy with the result.

"From what I can tell it's saying that parents can't keep an eye on kids 24/7. That's the outcome of the report and that's heartening to hear, because the family are going to be devastated by the loss."

The type of water-tank the boy drowned in was a very rare type.

Federated Farmers spokesperson Katie Milne said she only knows of a very limited number of cases where that type of water-tank is being used.

She said modern tanks are better designed, with tall straight sides, to be as safe as possible.
