A ship that's been sitting off the coast of Tauranga for more than six weeks will not be allowed to unload the palm kernel extract its carrying in New Zealand.

The Ministry for Primary Industries has determined the extract has come from an unregistered supplier in Malaysia.

It says there's the potential for it to be contaminated - and therefore will not allow it to be distributed in New Zealand.

The MV Molat's been holding 23,000 tonnes of palm kernel extract off Tauranga's coast since September 6th.
