The Paeroa community's still in the dark over a serious shooting incident.

A man has undergone surgery for gunshot wounds in Waikato Hospital, after exchanging fire with police on Tuesday night.

Hauraki District mayor John Tregidga says the incident isn't the norm for the area.

He says the closure of State Highway 2 for most of yesterday did disrupt things.

"The whole thing has been extremely unfortunate and I think we're all waiting to hear what actually happened."

Meanwhile, Waikato towns are looking at their options, after a day of disruption on their main road.

It's a vital link for trucks between Auckland and the Port of Tauranga.

Tregidga says they're pinning hopes on the Kaimai road being upgraded from Cambridge to Mt Maunganui.

"We think that long term, with the State Highway 1 four laning and the big investment there is a positive step to move kiwi vehicles in the long term."
