A list of Christmas dos and don't has been created to remind families the holiday season is a fun time of year.

The list has been created by non-profit organisation, Parenting Place.

It tells families in a humorous way not to do things like do all the work, or start fights with the in-laws.

Parenting Place creative producer John Cowan says people tend to forget the meaning of Christmas.

"Christmas is meant to be about grins and fun and family time and yet so many people get stressed out and blow their budget and they wreck their relationships and they haven't got any money in the new year.

"So it was just a few things to put the brakes on and to put a bit more fun into Christmas."

Mr Cowan says it's important families don't go to every engagement so they have time to relax.
