AA survey reveals shocking stats about our driving

We're not as good as we think we are behind the wheel.

AA Driving School's latest survey shows a third of New Zealanders feel unsafe while driving and most say they don't have confidence in other drivers.

85% of the nearly three thousand AA members surveyed say they saw other motorists exceed the speed limit, while 64% saw motorists drift out of a lane.

Other complaints from over 60 percent are motorists parking inconsiderately and those seen running a red light.

It seems we're more likely to point the finger at others when it comes to bad driving.

Driving School General Manager Roger Venn says there's a disconnect between the number of people driving badly and those who actually take ownership for their own mistakes.

"There's a definite disconnect between the number of people driving badly and those taking ownership for it," he said.

"If we were all driving as well as we think we are, then confidence levels on the road would be a lot higher."

The survey measured whether New Zealanders thought of themselves as considerate drivers, and how the purpose of their driving affected their behaviour on the road.

The results showed an "incredible level" of lazy and dangerous driving, Venn said.

"One of the main reasons for the lack of confidence in others' abilities is people claiming to see plenty of motorists ignoring basic road rules and road courtesies.

"If that's the case, there is a real need for better education and enforcement of some of these driving basics."
