NZ's domestic security questioned

UPDATED 8.11pm: A civil liberties lawyer says New Zealand's democracy would be destroyed, if we follow through on suggestions from a security expert this morning.

Bridgette Sullivan-Taylor has warned New Zealand is a sitting duck for terrorists, and needs security searches and ID checks in places like shopping malls.

But barrister Michael Bott says there are growing incursions on our civil liberties, and each time we're told it's for our own good.

He says once freedom of movement is hindered and people can be stopped for ID, society becomes similar to the kind of lifestyle we're trying to oppose.

Michael Bott questions how constant physical searches would work, if increased spying or surveillance isn't.

Strategy and organisation professor Bridgette Sullivan-Taylor claims New Zealand urgently needs a major security overhaul.

She believes there should be bag checks at shopping centres and movie theatres, restricted entry to basement or rooftop carparks, and the issuance of security passes to mall workers.

Dr Sullivan-Taylor has even gone as far as suggesting routine ID checks for New Zealanders.

She spoke as five people were arrested yesterday in Melbourne over an alleged ANZAC Day terror plot.

Meanwhile Sky City has refuted claims it's a sitting duck for a terror attack.

Security expert Bridgette Sullivan-Taylor says New Zealand needs a major domestic overhaul.

She says venues like the Sky Tower, Vector Arena and Westfield malls should introduce tighter security.

A Sky City spokesman says they have a world class security system with more than 130 security and surveillance staff.
