No summer holiday for many small businesses

Summer holidays are approaching fast and while they're a time of excitement and relaxation for most people, small businesses can dread them.

The great New Zealand shutdown can hit them badly in the pocket, with some scrambling to recover into March and April.

Auckland business mentor Chris Baker said the beach season is tough on the self-employed and small enterprises, with poor cash flow.

"They have a lot of outgoings for Christmas holiday wages, that customers won't pay them before the shutoff on December 24th and then of course there's getting the business up and going again in January."

He thinks it's ludicrous the whole country shuts down for the quintessential summer holiday but companies can help themselves get back on their feet after the break.

"Make sure that customers know when you're going to be back after the Christmas break," Baker advised.

"Most small business owners don't usually take a holiday in January, in my experience they're back as soon as they possibly can be."
