The road in between Auckland and Coromandel has been made a lot safer just in time for Christmas.

A new 3.5 million dollar roundabout has been put in place at the intersection of State Highways 25 and 2 near Thames.

NZTA Waikato journey manager Liam Ryan says they're hoping to reduce the number of accidents in the area.

He says the roundabout will make some improvements to safety by making it easier for those travelling on State Highway 25 to turn right.
