A new monument to commemorate the Land Wars could be going ahead in Taranaki.

The idea was put forward at the Te Huinga Taumatua Committee's first meeting, by a member of the public.

The previous Land Wars monument featuring a soldier was smashed on Waitangi Day in 1991, and never replaced.

Committee Co-Chairman Gordon Brown says more planning is needed, because the project is only in its early stages.

"Before we can make any decisions, we need to make decisions we need to have the information first - what was there, what is possible, and is that the correct place or not."

"That's something the community will look forward to having a say on."

The Land Wars, or New Zealand Wars, were a series of protracted armed conflicts between Māori and colonial British troops in the mid-19th century over disputed land sales to settlers which took several thousand lives.

"There were no winners in that war," Brown said. "And the healing process has taken a long time. It's a new beginning and the committee I co-chair certainly is certainly one example of that, of us all getting around the same table."

Prime Minister Bill English has suggested October 28 as a date for commemorating the Land Wars.
