Nationwide rules on freedom campers needed: Local Government NZ

Central government is being called upon to step up when it comes to dealing with issues related to freedom campers.

An overwhelming majority of attendees at the Local Government New Zealand conference voted for the Freedom Camping act to be amended.

This comes as the Christchurch City Council is just days away from voting to ban all freedom camping without toilet facilities throughout the district.

Akaroa Community Board chair Pam Richardson said the government needs to set rules so requirements are similar from one district to the next.

"So that the tourists that are here know what the rules are and that they are going to be the same throughout New Zealand."

Any vehicles without toilets should be at a camping ground that provided those facilities, she said.

At Thursday's council meeting, Christchurch councillors will vote to completely ban all types of freedom camping at Addington Park, Windsport Park, Lower Styx River Mouth, French Farm and Wainui.

The council had already recently temporarily closed these sites until May 2017.

Richardson said French Farm was like a campsite before the ban and it caused a number of issues.

"Parking close to the road, the toilet facilities not appropriate for it...fires were lit on the edge of the road, children were playing on the road."
