The mystery man who's fighting for life in Wellington Hospital after being rescued from the sea at Eastbourne on Monday has finally been identified.

He's a foreign student in his twenties from India.

An interpreter is now helping police to contact his family.

Detective Sergeant Grant Carroll says the breakthrough came when a New Zealander attending a conference in Sri Lanka contacted police to say he recognised the man's photo after it had been published on a news website.
