It's not just Amazon – China's e-commerce giant Alibaba is also looking towards the New Zealand market.

Key people from Alibaba's leadership team are in Wellington for the New Zealand China Business Forum.

They want to expand the company's reach in New Zealand, including signing up more kiwi businesses to the site and launching Alibaba's payment system Alipay in local shops.

Alibaba's figures show about 400 kiwi companies are already on the platform, reaching out to two billion customers across the Asian region.

Wellington's mayor sees a bright future in signing kiwi businesses up with the Chinese giant.

Justin Lester said that joining offers huge opportunities for local companies wanting to create business overseas, citing local businesses that have already made it big abroad.

Mr Lester gave the example of Fix and Fogg peanut butter, which has expanded to North America and through Asia, as well as companies that are continuing to manufacture locally, such as Garage Project and Parrotdog.

"We're seeing all of these burgeoning Wellington companies grow into an international scale," he said.
