Charlotte has climbed the ranks to be named the most popular baby name in New Zealand for 2017 - alongside the favourite boy's name - Oliver.

Charlotte is on top of the girls' list, up from second last year, while Oliver has topped the list for the fifth year in a row.

Arlo is gaining momentum and has jumped from 23rd spot in 2016 to 10th in 2017.

It seems that New Zealanders are sticking to traditional names with Jack, Noah and William rounding out the top four.

James is still a favourite name for baby boys, making the top 20 every year since 1963.

Last year saw 60,935 babies come into the world.
