More speed cameras planned

New digital speed cameras will be installed in 33 new locations across the country.

Work is starting this month to erect the poles on which the cameras will be mounted with East Coast Road in Redvale, north of Auckland, first on the list, national manager road policing Superintendent Steve Greally says.

The cameras will be installed from next year.

The placement of the poles and cameras will be in high crash risk areas of the country, based on analysis by traffic experts, and where there's a history of fatalities and injury crashes in an effort to drive down speed related deaths and injuries.

"We know from international experience that speed cameras do have an impact on slowing people down, particularly around the sphere of influence of the camera," Supt Greally said.

This is the third phase of the $10-million speed camera expansion programme which was announced in July 2013.

The programme will see up to 56 fixed cameras placed at high risk sites.

Fifteen of the cameras will be installed in the wider Auckland region, stretching from Counties Manukau to the Waitemata district.

Seven will be installed in the Waikato region, and seven across the lower South Island. The others are scattered across the central North Island.
