Child Poverty Action is the latest advocacy group to praise the government for delivering its families package, but it would like the financial assistance to start earlier than July next year.

"This is a long overdue response to the disastrous child poverty experienced since the 1990s," CPAG spokeswoman Susan St John said.

"The prime minister is to be applauded for prioritising child poverty."

But the group was concerned the changes won't kick in until July 1, she said.

"If we can increase student support in January, surely we could expedite the payments for children too."

The package was unveiled on Thursday and the government says it will lift more than 70,000 children out of poverty in the first year.

By 2021 that figure is forecast to grow to 88,000 and the package will have cost $5.5 billion.

The plan contains a raft of pre-election commitments, including paid parental leave increases, a Best Start tax credit for families with young children, a baby bonus and a $35-a-week increase in the accommodation supplement.

The Government says 385,000 families with children will be better off by an average $3900 a year by 2020-21.

Parliament has been sitting under urgency to pass legislation that puts the package into law.
