Updated 3.46pm: $37 million worth of  cycleway projects have just been unveiled by the Government.

A major transport agency says it's on board with the country's cities having more and improved cycleways.

New Zealand Transport Agency Chief Executive Geoff Dangerfield says more cycles are being imported than there were 10 years ago and census data shows there's a shift in the number of people who are commuting by bike.

"Our job is to try and shift that, and shifting that involves getting some good infrastructure and making that safe."

Minister of Transport Simon Bridges has outlined which schemes will be funded while in Auckland today.

13 projects, in Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin are to be funded with work on almost all of them to be done over the next six to nine months.

Auckland's to get the lion's share of the funding with around $22 million being allocated to six cycleway projects in the region.

Mayor Len Brown says with the government's money they can now really focus their money on the vision of delivering cycleways.

He says they are appreciative of the Government's commitment so they can commit in even bigger budgetary numbers.

The Government will inject $3.2 million into the development of Christchurch's cycleways network.

The money will be split between the Matai Street East cycleway, the Papanui parallel cycleway and the cycleway connecting Rolleston with Lincoln.

The announcement comes as the Christchurch City Council faces a budget blow-out, with the cost of building 13 cycleways across the city more than double what it thought.
