New Zealand is - sort of - a nation of six million, with 4.6 million living here and many more planning to return some day.

It's thought by some that around 1.4 million New Zealanders are living overseas, however Statistics New Zealand reports the figure is not nearly that high. Their figures show the number's more like 600,000.

A Kea Colmar Brunton survey of nearly 14,000 expat kiwis shows 54 percent are likely to come back - up from 46 percent in 2013.

Kea chairman Phil Veal believes those wanting to return consider New Zealand one of the best places to live.

New Zealand is seen as less of a financial investment and more about where our expat's future is. The lifestyle superpower thing remains supreme."

In the mean time, he said they're an important source of engagement and investment.

"It doesn't matter in the world you live, but if we can keep you engaged inNew Zealand then we can use you for the greater economic good."
