UPDATED 5.57PM: One of our greatest All Blacks will be immortalised in his north Otago home town.

A local town committee has commissioned a life sized statue of Richie McCaw to be built in the centre of Kurow, and the former skipper is on board.

Former All Blacks manager John Sturgeon, who is on the committee, said they want to acknowledge McCaw's career.

He said locals aren't just proud of his skills, but his commitment and leadership as well.

It's the job of a career, and the man being given the chance to sculpt a life-size sculpture of Richie McCaw says he is over the moon.

Oamaru sculptor Don Paterson's been given the nod to create the sculpture.

Paterson said he's been excited since he found out about the tribute a month ago.

"I'm not your stereotypical artist. I'd be still playing footy myself at 60 if my legs would let me. So yeah, I'm just over the moon."

Paterson said he is still flirting with a number of ideas for the statue.

"I just sort of thought more of the man on the land, who's got the footy under his arm and he's got his other hand on his hip in a good sort of stance."

It is hoped the piece will help push tourists to visit the town and pay tribute to one of the area's favourite sons.
