Auckland's waterfront will be a hive of activity today as the Masters Games and entertainment kicks off.

The 10 kilometre race and half marathon - which former long-distance athlete Allison Roe is competing in - are underway at the waterfront.

Lawn bowls, cycling, softball and hockey are taking place in other parts of the city.

Masters Games chief executive Jennah Wootten says a free entertainment hub opens at Queens Wharf today.

"Bands, comedy, fantastic hospitality offering down here - so, we want to see Aucklanders making the most of it. [The entertainment hub] is only open until the 30th of April."

The games had their opening ceremony last night, and Ms Wootten said it couldn't have been more spectacular.
