A Raumati man has died after being hit by a car on State Highway One, just south of Paraparaumu.

The crash happened around 9:30pm yesterday, and appears to have been as he was walking home.

The man was taken to Wellington Hospital in a helicopter, but he later died as a result of his injuries.

Police are investigating the crash, but say initial indications are the driver of the car was not at fault.
