People aren't convinced by the Government's denial that foreign buyers are to blame for Auckland's overheated housing market.

A Research New Zealand survey asked Kiwis how much of an effect they felt overseas investors had had on the current housing stock.

Spokesman Emanuel Kalafatelis said most people have suggested that overseas investors are to blame for pushing the prices of housing up to unaffordable levels.

"Surprisingly, 72 percent felt that overseas investors had had a big affect or some affect in the market. There's a strong opinion overseas investors have helped to really heat up the market in Auckland."

Mr Kalafatelis said the study also asked if people agree with foreigners being able to buy New Zealand property.

"Not surprisingly, we got a big fat 'no', really. 57 percent of our respondents felt that they shouldn't be legally able to buy residential property, as opposed to 36 percent who felt that they should be able to."

Meanwhile, protesters are gathering in Auckland today to call on the government to do more about the cost of housing in the city.

The protest at Aotea Square from 1pm will have a "Monopoly" theme, organisers Stand Up Youth Union Movement and Unions Auckland say.

"For young people today, it's like starting a game of Monopoly without even enough cash to even buy the very cheapest property on the board.

Meanwhile, those who played before us still hold all the cards," says spokesman Hamish Hutchison.

We're assembling "to express a deep anger for being cheated off the board. It's time to change the rules of the game," Mr Hutchison says.
