Leaders meet to tackle witch doctors

UPDATED 5.57PM: Indian community leaders have gathered to tackle the issue of witch doctors targeting the vulnerable in their community.

Around 20 people have come together at a community centre in Auckland's Mt Roskill to air their views.

Speakers have so far condemned the practice, and called on people to avoid using the services of so-called priests, witch doctors and astrologers.

Community leader Pratima Nand said people hoping to make contact with dead loved ones can be very vulnerable.

"When you really love somebody and you lose that person, you become so desperate because science cannot bring the loved one back," she said.

"They dwell on these witchcrafts and black magic, living in hope that what they promise will materialise."

Thakur Ranjit Sing said the meeting "was to create enough awareness about these bogus priests from India who have been coming to Auckland in particular and preying on the vulnerability of the Indian community."

Earlier this week Immigration New Zealand said nine witch doctors have been identified following allegations of unethical or extortionate behaviour by black magic practitioners.

Five have now left the country and the remaining four - who're on visitor visas - are liable for deportation.
