Today is the last day for New Zealanders to make submissions on voluntary euthanasia.

The Health Select Committee is investigating public attitudes towards the introduction of legislation which would permit medically-assisted dying.

It would be allowed if someone has a terminal illness or an irreversible condition which makes life unbearable.

Wellington woman Lecretia Seales went to court to fight for the right to end her life without her doctor being prosecuted but passed away before the legal process had come to an end.

It prompted some politicians to push for a new law to allow doctors to help end the life of certain patients.

Legalising voluntary euthanasia would follow in the footsteps of a handful of countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Oregon and four other American states.
